HISTORY

Article published in Leigh Journal by Brian Gomm on 17th January 2012

AT the age of 60 veteran motocross rider Brian Hayes can look back on 2011 as his best
since he took up the sport of dirt bike racing 37 years ago in 1974

Now living at Atherleigh but a 'Plonk Loner' and proud of it, Brian lives and breathe motorbikes
and six days a week he and his wife, Denise, run B & D Motorcycles in High Street, Atherton.

But for five months a year on his days off Brian travels the length of the country racing his beloved
German-built Maico motorcycles. And in 2011 the Leigh MCC founder member and chairman enjoyed his best ever
season riding in 27 of a possible 30 events to finish third overall in the over 60s age group in the
Toughsheet National Twin Shock Championship.

That's a far cry from when he bought his first bike as an 11 year-old, a 150cc two-stroke James Comet that he spotted
on the back of the rag and bone man's cart and forked out thirty bob (£1.50p) for it!

"That bike didn't last long, though, about half-an hour riding on the pit rucks off Wigan Road," recalled Brian with a smile.

"Nobody told me you had to mix oil with the petrol in a two stroke and the engine seized!"

He's come on a bit since then though and had a succession of British made Matchless machines and still has a
classic G3 350cc road bike of that very make.

He fancied his chances at moto-cross riding, although back then scrambling was the popular name for the sport in Britain.

He bought a 250cc KTM and rode with Bolton MCC then in 1976 founded Leigh MCC along with the likes of another Leigh lad, Martin Snape, who like Brian is still up there along the front runners in the veteran classes,
or at least he was until sidelined last year by a nasty leg injury.

Brian still uses his twin shock 500 Maico in modern events as well as for those specially organised for the older machines,
having settled on that particular make after trying Yamaha, Honda and CCM machinery.

In fact Brian is somewhat besotted with Maico machinery and rode one to seventh spot in the
2001 world championship event at Hawkstone Park, Shropshire.

"I've the biggest collection of Maicos apart from Cumbrian Bill Brown, the Maico importer,"
he said proudly pointing out that he beat Bill into fourth place in 2011 championship.

And he's raring to go even better next season.

"I proved I could beat the top men, I'm not greedy, I'll settle for second spot next year," said Brian.

"I can thoroughly recommend this sport, you either do it or put on the slippers and watch telly.

"Our Leigh club season open's at Morley's Hall track at Astley on May 13.
We've been there since 1994, it's a great venue and we have a good relationship with the landowner and the police.
If anybody is interested in having a go at competition riding ring me at the shop and we'll provide the information -
